Im looking at an 81. What should I expect to pay for one in ready to sail condition with a trailer? I could buy this boat tomorrow. Like new sails, aluminum tilt trailer, ready to go for $1200. He says the cordage around the trampoline could be replaced, and the color looks slightly oxidized, but the boat is in "excellent shape". What do you guys think? Is this a deal? Thanks for your help. |

Maybe, take and post some pictures. I paid 1000 for my 88 with a crappy galv trailer, ok sails and not so great lines and rigging with beach wheels too. |

http://www.reno.craigslist.org/boa/1782503843.html This is the craigslist post for the boat there are several pics. There is no trapeze riggging, but the registration is paid through 2011. I searched the classifieds on this forum, and found a lot of spectacular and newer h 16's asking 3-4K. Is it common for a well restored 81 h16 to get this much? Is there much difference in prices for different parts of the country? Is their a certain year that is more desirable than others? Thanks for helping me out. |

Three years ago I paid $850 for an '81 with a galvanized trailer. I probably could have sailed her right away, roughly, but I chose to spend time re-rigging her instead. I was/am a new sailor and took the process as education. She came with 3 mains and two jibs. I replaced all the running and standing rigging having read here enough times that it's simply prudent to do so. I replaced the tramp and jib gear set. I also had to spend a lot of time on the trailer making it street legal and safe; re-wiring, re-lighting, new bearings, tires and wheels. I also installed numerous upgrades too numerous to mention, but I enjoy doing it a lot, and it increased my growing knowledge of the boat and its operations. If the sails are new, and if the trailer is that nice then it might be a great deal at $1,200, but, like tallguy says, it depends. Post some pics and let us see her. |

So the range is $850 to $1200 with another comparable boat for 1k If you want to be sailing by Sunday and it's a good boat a $200 premium isn't so bad. I’ve rented boats for more than that before. Besides the seller might take a lower offer depending how motivated he is. If you have time to look for something cheaper is it worth your time to possibly save $200? Just do your homework make sure it’s a good boat and has what you need, if not subtract that from the offer you make Personally I’ve been looking for a H14 in great shape and would pay a premium to get the boat I want. |

It's hard to say. When I bought my boat, I had no idea what I was buying. It could have been a hunk of junk and I wouldn't have known the difference. As it turned out, I got a really good boat (1985) with a good trailer for $700. I started out with this... ![]() ...but ended up with this 6 years later . . . ![]() ...after an unknown amount of $$$$$$ spent and some wasted on trial and error projects. I was provided with valuable info by the two Matts Bounds/Miller as well as many others that helped me along the way. I have enough spare parts from failed projects to build another boat. Sailing solo most of the time instilled in me a need to make thinks easier. As I read your post, I could see myself. I expect that something similar might happen to you. I enjoy sailing but I also enjoy working on my boat as well. The guys out here are pretty honest and are unlikely to give you any false info. Hindsight is always 20-20. Take your time and ask plenty of questions. Wait for a multitude of answers before making a decision. It has taken me a year to put together the spi system on my boat and cost me only about $400 for everything. I almost paid that much for my 6:1 main system. I've discovered in many cases, there is no right or wrong. It's whatever works best for you. I'm sure you'll do fine. ![]() |

Thanks for the thoughtful replies. I've learned so much just cruising posts on here the last few nights, this is a great forum! My offer stands for this one at $1000 so we'll see, but for now I'm still looking for the right cat. |

@DavidBell47 : I'm trying to understand where the righting line is attached on your boat on the hulls. I can see on the picture that it goes around the front pylons and it goes until the rear of the pylon where there is your sticker "Hobie Cat". But on what thing is attached the end of the line ? the foot strap attach or some hardware ? Thanks for the info you might have on this setup as it seems to be very "ergonomic" ! I'm still a novice and need to learn from more experienced... |

There's a small hole drilled through the deck lip; the line passes through that and is terminated with a stopper knot. |

Nicolas, In this pic, you can see that I've drilled a small hole in the lip of the hull in which a much smaller line is connecting the righting line to the boat. I think the only difference is that since this pic was taken, I've changed the smaller line to black. Hope this helps. ![]() |

Thanks for this detail, that's interesting as I would have never think this setup require to "drill" a hole in a hull...I'll think about it this summer... |

Post subject: | Re: Hobie 16 Values? |
Make sure that the hole is drilled only in the lip. Here's an older but clearer pic. Remember, this setup doesn't require this configuration. It's just the one that "I" preferred. ![]() |

I have my line going from in between the the front pylons and wrapped around the dolphin striker. Will that work or should I make a setup like yours? |
