| Post subject: | Question about hull taking on water |
I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this. As the owner of an older boat I like to have an idea of what could happen when things go wrong. People told me about what a pitch-pole was like, but, now that I've had one I know what to expect and what I'll do differently from now on such as putting any loose gear on a tether. Anyway suppose I start taking on water in one hull. Will it sink to the point of capsizing the boat? What will it be like to try and sail back to land? Any input is appreciated. Eric |

If you take on a significant amount of water, it makes sailing difficult as the water sloshes fore and aft in the hull. You have to be careful to keep fore aft balance. The hulls do have positive flotation to keep it from sinking completely. |

Having a water logged hull makes it decidely difficult to keep the boat upright. Yes, this is the voice of experience speaking. I've been doing this long enough that I've made most of the mistakes that are possible. If anyone wants to take some hilarious video, make sure one of your buddies has a hull plug missing next time he goes out. Follow him and be ready for some real action. Rather than try and sail in, I found it more efficient to have it towed in on it's side. Those hulls are also very heavy when they are full of water. Fun stuff. |
