I purchased an 1987 Hobie Cat 16 this morning for $450. Nice boat in decent shape and can't wait to get it rigged and sailing. In all the years I have been watching Hobie sailing around my area I have never seen a dagger board being used. The original owner told me that they were critical to the upwind performance, but rarely used. I sail in open water so should I use the daggerboards or leave them in the garage? Thanks Andrew |

Are you sure it is a H-16 and not a H-18? I was not aware of any H-16's that have daggerboards. Thanks! Eric Weller |

If you have a 16 your boat will not have dagger boards. If you have a boat with dagger boards, it is not a Hobie 16. Maybe an 18 as stated by Mr. Weller. Or something else perhaps? |

Hobie 16 does not have dagger boards, they have asymetrical hulls. if you have dagger board slots then you have an 18 |

Regardless of what type of boat you have, if it has daggerboards, then you need to use them - you won't be able to go upwind without them. As others have said, if it has daggerboards, it is definitely not a Hobie 16. sm |

what i would do is either try to find out what model it is om the boat itself, which you might not be able to do because the stickers/plates have become too worn to read, as is the case with mine, or just measure how long it is and go from there. if the reason you thought it was a 16 was because it said 16 on the sail, it might just have the wrong sails on it. |

If the trampoline is elevated off the hulls, it's a H16. If the trampoline is flush with the hulls, them it's an H18...providing it's a Hobie at all. |

You might want to check the first three characters of the hull VIN number to confirm it's a Hobie. http://www.hobiecat.com/support/index-sail.html |

I stand corrected. The original owner knew very little about the boat. I knew it was a Hobie and wrongly assumed it was a 16'. It is actually an 18' which makes the deal even better. I ended up paying the original owner $500 as he included a decent trailer and a beach dolly. The sails look to have minimal damage and the tramp has a few years left it in. Thanks for the help.
