I was curious what sort of lengthy distances from shore into the ocean, sea, huge lake, etc, some of you more adventurous sailors have gone on the 16. I was told of an amazing fishing/diving/lobster spot offshore from my place out into the Atlantic a distance that good sense would dictate is too far. Yet, what an amazing adventure it would be! Any good distance stories? I could use some guidance on this issue. |

See and Be Seen!!! I've sailed quite a long way off shore, but always with others. Otherwise, I sail within sight of other boats or 1-1½ miles off shore. (I can swim that distance if I have to) I broke a shroud and de-masted years ago, and occasionally on these forums you'll read how some people aren't able to right their boat after capsizing without assistance from a power boat or an extra body hanging on the righting line. Seriously, find another boat (or two or more) to go with you to this amozing fishing/diving/lobster spot offshore. Keep it safe! Richard |

We regularly sail out several miles into the Chesapeake bay. Never bothered me much until one day a fast moving fog came rolling in and we couldn't see the shore anymore or have really any idea in which direction to sail. That was a little unnerving. |

Yeah, I'd never get far enough from shore to lock the rudders down. |

My wife and I sail off of Jekyll Island, GA quite a bit and we typically sail about 1 1/2 to 2 miles off shore. The water is pretty shallow all around Jekyll and you need to be out that far to miss the numerous shoals and breakers that show up out of no where. |

For myself only a few miles and also pays to do so when having onshore winds especially when sailing alone. Last summer I popped a shroud and safely blew back into shore holding up a section of the jib. |
