Post subject: | teaching/launching advice re: Avon, NC |
Hi, all, We are new to sailing, took our Hobie 16 out on the Hudson River (NY) yesterday for the first time, with a friend who's sailed for years. Fun! We're taking the Hobie to Avon, NC next week for a week's vacation. Looking for someone to give us some private lessons, also wondering if there's a place we could "rent" a spot to keep our boat parked for a week on the Sound in Avon, so we don't have to trailer it back and forth to our rental house on the ocean side. I looked up sail/surf shops, etc. but we'd have to drive quite a distance to take lessons...am hoping for some experienced person who might want to make some money and share some knowledge who lives locally. Also, I looked up launch areas... I don't think our Saturn Vue is sand-worthy, so if we do have to trailer it back and forth somewhere, I'm wondering where the closest places to Avon might be... where we don't have to carry the boat a long way. Any advice would be most welcome! Thanks for your time and thoughts, Donna Davies Marlboro, NY |

I'm renting a house in Avon too, only in October. ![]() I'm still getting the lay of the land from the owner but he says a convenient let in is <5 min. from the house on the sound and that the trailer stays on the hard until you're ~12 feet from the water, then my cat trax can take it from there. Not sure but it sounds like you're gonna have to trailer it each time. I'll ask him the questions you posted and will reply with his responses. |

Having a house in Avon and having sailed my H16 there a number of times, there are a few good places to launch within a few minutes drive that do not require 4WD. However, these "good" places require that you understand the water depth, sandbars, etc in the area. I have had 10+ years of experience in the spot so I dont have a problem. Just be safe, go slow at first. Check out Canadian Hole. Leave Avon going south on Hwy 12. Canadian Hole is just out of town on the right. Go past the parking lot, showers, and bathrooms to get to a turn in with a good launching beach. PS if there is a small craft advisory with 25-30 knot winds, even the sound is super rough. Trust me. Its hella fun but very dangerous. Almost broke a lot of equipment. |
