Hey! The Jib's battens on my H16 always get clipped on the halyard whenever I tack or gybe. It stays like that untill I hit a gust and then BANG! It lets go. I would really like to fix this but don't really know how. please help me! Thanks! |

There is not really a "fix" for this since it is inherant to the Hobie. ONe thing that can help is fixing a small line around the jib and main halyards near the downhaul that essentially pulls them back on the mast towards the tramp. Some folks use the end of the jib halyard for this, I use a small bungie cord. IN heavier winds it is much less of an issue. There are also batten caps available that sit inside the pocket and adjust with a screw I believe which means less to hang up on the halyards. Have fun on the Hobie |

Also, in higher winds it is not an issue |

you can buy a set of flexible battens for your jib for about $30, thats what i did, then it moves easier to the other side. |

The softer battens (not the Hobie standard ones) work well. I do not think they are class legal for racing though...does not matter to me but may be important for you. If so, swap in the Hobie battens for racing, use the aftermarket softer battens for day sailing. One other interesting note. On my 78 Keoke boat, the stock Hobie battens were all too short by an inch or inch and a half. Perhaps they slightly altered the dimensions of the newer sails/battens to help with the hang up issue? In any event, the soft battens were the perfect length, but required a little drilling to make the holes large enough for the batten ties. RP |
