tied to the line that is run through blocks and mounted through the hulls a typical hawaiian style? Or was this something that the previous owner just rigged up??

I've never seen a righting system that ran through blocks unless using a righting bag. You might have to post a photo.

Short answer is yes.

The there are two types of "snap back" righting lines. One uses a large, hollow core line that has bungee running inside it. The other uses a solid line (a lot of us used old mainsheets) with a bungee that attaches to the dolphin striker, runs back to a block tied to the traveller eyestrap, then forward to a terminating block that the actual righting line ran through.

The Hawaiian Righting system with the blocks can be seen in a diagram on page 18 of the parts and accessories catalog
