Post subject:  Batton question

I removed my battons to have my sails cleaned and serviced on my 1981 H16. On the battons for the main I notice a very slight curvature when layed flat on the bench. Should they slide back into the batton pockets like a smiley face (batton ends higher than the middle) or frowny face (batton ends lower than the middle)? Or does it matter at all? If I were to guess I'd say smiley face. The batton tie ends are the old type that have the hole right in the middle so no help there. I have the new type of batton tie ends that I will put on when this question answered since they are supposed go on only one way (eye over mouth).

I can't think of a single reason that it would make a difference; as the batten has no effect on the sail in the vertical direction.

Battens should be straight when lying on their side. Shouldn't be any up or down curvature.

I looked at them again, it's only the 2 longest ones and the curvature is very very minimal. Might have something to do with being rolled up in the sail around the boom for the majority of 28 years. I've decided not to sweat it. For we must not sweat the petty things and pet the sweaty things!
