Hello,

I was just wondering what it takes to maintain a H16. I know there are variables like where it's going to be sailed and how often. So let's say for arguments sake: sailed on weekends from May - September, mostly salt water (bay).

Is there a schedule of some sorts, like a car has, or do you just replace things as they "go"?

Also, how much would you say per year (on average) it costs to maintain given the above information?

If I left out any information, please just let me know :-)

One more question (might be easier to answer): If I were looking at having to rebuild a boat (let's say hulls are in good shape) what would it cost to replace everything to factory spec or better?

There is no maintenance "schedule" per se.

For sailing in sail water, the best thing you can do for your boat is rinse it with fresh water often (at the end of each weekend).

Lines get replaced when they start to show significant wear. Wires (in salt water use) should be replaced every few years, whether they look like they need it or not.

In the fall, when you put the boat away, take everything apart, clean, inspect and replace anything that's suspect. Don't wait for spring to do this - you'll end up losing days of sailing waiting for parts. This way, the boat will be ready to go on that first nice sailing day in spring.

Your last question is a little too vague. You could spend thousands of dollars to complete a set of old hulls to "like new" condition - but many parts of the boat (castings / extrusions) don't deteriorate with age.

Sails and tramps are the biggest ticket items, followed by rudders - you could spend $3K in a heartbeat right there if you bought new Hobie branded stuff.
