I just ran upon a scream'in deal for a H14 turbo for my thirteen year old boy to captain and I need to know if you can cut down an H16 mast to work on a H14 turbo?

He's not liking being "the crew" anymore and we end up wrestling over who gets the helm, so my best solution is to get him his own ride.

If anyone knows if this will work I would greatly appreciate it.

Searching for stuff on these forums is the way to tie into the combined wisdom of the ages...
If I had an extra H16 mast I'm sure I could make it work...
I have a H14T and I'd say go for the screamin' deal !

You can "make it work", but may be disappointed in the results.

The 16's mast section is much larger than the 14's. It's heavier. It will increase the pitching moment of the boat (weight up high), thus increasing the tendency to put the bow under on a boat that is already pitchpole prone.

that comment is 100000% correct....i used to take me a crew out on that sucker.....combined 375lbs....when there was no wind, the hulls were under the water...but when there was wind, that thing would go over in two seconds on a reach......amazing boat if you can handle it on your own....i think a 14t could easily out run a 16 anyday of the week

375 lbs on a 14 is entirely too much weight - the boat was never designed to carry that much weight.

That's a lot of weight even on a 16.

And a 16 is faster. It just feels faster on a 14 because it's so small.

Okay, thanks everyone for the input, found out the guy has the mast as well but it's slightly bent.....any ideas on how to straighten it? I don't know how badly the bend is because I haven't set eyes on it yet. The guy said a "slight" bend, I guess I'll find out another man's definition of slight this weekend.

Yes, bent masts of various degrees and various techniques to repair have been dealt with here... Just learn to use Search!
I hope it's not too bad and you and your son have a boat you can enjoy... eventually.

Not exclusively, I'm basing my opinion on sail area to weight ratio. Assuming one 200# skipper and no crew the 16 will weigh ~ 520# and has 218 sq ft of sail area. That's .42 sq ft of sail per pound for the 16. The 14T with the same skipper will weigh 450 lb and has 148 sq ft of sail. That's only .33 sq ft of sail per pound, a serious disadvantage to the 16.

Nope, not even a contest, a Hobie 16 will beat a 14 every time. Longer water line and more powerful rig.

Don't put the hobie 16 mast on the 14. You'll likely break the 14 and or ruin the way it sails. If you have to do it, yes it will work but far from ideal.

Got the 14T it's an 85 boat and looks likes its in better than good condition. The guy was right it's got a banana mast, I've got it tied between two fence posts and have pulled the bend out of it, now the heating and cooling of the sun will hopefully get the majority of the bend out, then I plan on sandwiching it between a couple two by sixes and slam it straight using through bolts and some big azz washers.
Was thinking about lining the gap between the boards with aluminum foil and using the hot coals from the fire place to add a little extra heat...anyone heard of this technique?

Aluminum foil will not keep the boards from catching fire. I say go for it but be sure to take pictures. :lol:
