Post subject:  Trapeze harness - what one?

I'm about to order some stuff. (I have 2 16's) and just picked up another for 175.00!

I want a new harness, but what one? I see skippers, and one like it with detacthable shoulder straps, and then the big one with lumbar.

I'm older - (53) so I like comfort... but I'm on a small lake (about 75 acres) and one length doesn't last very long before I have to get off the wire and swap sides and get back on.
(so lots of OFF AND ON - short runs). Recommendations?

I have 2 of them, but OLD and really quite small for us.

Also thinking of getting a mama or baby bob? Is there any difference? I like the smaller size (looks wise) and price... but I'm hoping to keep the mast tip up to ease recovery. Seems the tip is always underwater - water on sails and I often stick the mast tip into lilly pads. Hoping to keep it up a bit. (turtling not really a issue since our lake isn't deep enough to turtle (7 ft maybe?) at best. Suggestions again?

Thanks for sharing your expertise! in advance.

first question, how is your back. skipper harness is good if you have a good back. convertible harness if you have a bad back, more support. if you will be sharing it with other crew people , i would recommend a convertible, because you can adapt it to different uses. Ive used a half or skippers harness for twenty years and recently upped to a convertible for support. HAVE FUN ON THE WIRE, the view is great from out there.

Rojoyinc - Small lake; Short tacks-You don't need an expensive harness with straps and lumbar support. Also, you live in Grand Rapid, MI = short sailing season. If you want comfort get a crotchless harness with spreader bar.
I don't know much about mamma or baby bobs, but I'd certainly get something that works well if I sailed on a 7 ft. deep lake with lilly pads. I've turtled my boat several times and that wasn't so bad. I've gotten the mast stuck in the mud twice in a shallow lake and that was awful!

The "Mama Bob" is probably overkill for a H16. The "Baby Bob" will keep your mast above water. The "Mama Bob" also weighs more which will make it harder to upright after a capsize.

Although you don't have to worry about going full turtle in a shallow lake, you are more likely to drive your bows into the bottom during a pitchpole which puts alot of stress on the pylon/hull interface.
