We had really good wind today, 15-18 knots with higher gusts. Problem was that it was really gusty. At times, for short periods, I could have easily stepped out on the wire with my crew (who pretty much stayed on the wire the whole time). Although she got dunked and washed astern 3 times in complete lulls. It seemed like a better idea for me to just stay on the rail and sheet out for the gusts, in for the lulls. I was keeping a close traveller the whole time and working the sheet quite alot. What do you guys do when its blowing strong but not steady?

Most of my sailing is in Mission Bay (San Diego) and the ocean. The wind is usually steady and I trap out when it's blowing strong enough; but I'm not very comfortable trapping out on most lakes where it's gusty or the wind comes at you from different directions. If I'm not in my comfort zone, I do as you did. I stay on the tramp or rail and work the main and tiller.
