I picked up a mast with the older hook and slip-off-and-crash style mast base. Where does the hole go for the pin to use a step link? Measurements or pictures would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Maybe you could supply a pic of your base and someone could then annotate it with the proper hole placement?

Generally, it looks like a 0.250" hole transverse (athwart?) to the main body of the protruding 'hook'. Also, the hook must clear the mast step link fixation points* on the base when the ball is properly positioned in the mast step- with proper plastic/TFE bearing - and rotation to the stop points on the base. Additional mast rake moves the hook lower as the mast tilts aft so clearance should be measured with mast at desired setting.

The link I use has two marked sets of holes- for H14 and H16.

* Most remove the mast step link after stepping.

Does this make sense?

The hook broke off, so I ground down that area, drilled a hole, hinged up and the ball went past the cup, lowered and put pin in the other hole, passed the cup again. Measured center of cup to hige ho;es, drilled another hole, this time ball lines up with cup, but the mast won't drop in cup, looks like mast base is sitting on hinge, not allowing to drop in cup. Will take picture tomorrow, just can't figure it out, thanks.

I have a hole where you pointed at, just can't see it in picture, when it's there, ball is past cup, I will try flipping the hinge around, but I think it won't fit into mast base then, I will check when the rain stops, thanks for your thoughts, will take more pics as I degress.

The mast step link is upside down in the photo.

Problem solved, the link needed to be flipped around like Wildman said, thanks to all for the help. Now with a 4-1 block and tackle and a gin pole, I can raise and lower the mast all by myself! :D

My 2 boats have a hole at the base of the mast for raising. A recent 3rd boat has a hole that "Seems" broken? it's a open hole? Is this normal? (it doesn't look like broken mast bottom) seems designed this way? SCARED to raise it - we put a bunge around it to keep it from lifting and slipping out. It was raised fine, but I don't like the idea of lowering/re-raising for winter. Is this the way older boats were? or is the bottom part of the mast at the hole broken? (it's a hole now that's open) not a complete circle.

Again, pictures are helpful. It kind of sounds like the hook is broke off, mine was like that, so I drilled the hole just a little above the hook, you might have to grind off and round it off. Try to get a picture, if not, I can take a picture of mine.
