Hi,

I just bought my first sailboat, a Hobie 16. It is a 1984 in outstanding condition which I got for a song. I've sailed Sunfish and cabin class (22' Catalina) but never a Hobie Cat. The wife and I are very excited. I have much to learn and am looking forward to lurking this forum for some good advice and info.

Welcome to you and your wife from the Hobie community. :)

I'm somewhat out of place by doing this, but is always exciting for me to hear of a newcomer to our ranks. Your home Hobie fleet is #131 in OKC. In addition to information available per this service you have invaluable hands on experience waiting.

A bunch of us "northerners" are coming down for the DaggerLess Regatta (14/16/Wave) festivities, and maybe some racing too. I'm pretty sure there are all skill levels competing (my wife and I went to our 1st regatta 2 weeks after buying the boat, "It's what Hobie people do") Would really like to meet you both out at Lake Hefner April 29 & 30.

Fair winds, and fire off some questions.

John, thanks for the nice welcome. Wow! I'm surprised you guys have ragattas so early in the season. The water is pretty cold in late April. You must not be planning to get wet.....unlike me. :)

We're still very inexperienced in catarmaran sailing. Luckily, several of our friends have cats (of different brands) who have offered to get us up to speed on the Hobie.

Anyway, we look forward to meeting everyone on April 29th.

Welcome to the Hobie life. Go to www.catssalor.com and register and join the forums. There is a great open forum and I think there is also a 16 forum too. Also order Rick Whiter;s "Catamaran Racing for the 9o's". There is a whole chapter on the 16 and this book will teach you more than you could learn it three years on your own. Just read and practice , read and practice. Nothing will beat time on the boat.

ReededOne gave me an idea in one of the other threads. Take 4-6 of these:

Cut the ends of and use plastic to band them together. Make ends out of glassed over plywood. Throw some clamps on the lids and put a shelf in one end for rudders, blocks etc. I think it would make a good box.

If you don't already have wheels you can't beat this.

Wow! Lots of good stuff here. I have a couple of questions.

This Hobie 16 has been sitting in a building for about 7 years. The hulls, tramp, hardware, and sails are in excellent condition. However, I was thinking about replacing all the lines. Do you think I should replace the lines? Also, it does not have a mast float. Is a mast float something most people use? Thanks again for the help.

I'll post a pic as soon as I can get my FTP program running. It's bugging.

Nice website. I would replace all your standing rigging (Shroud and bridle. Internal jib halyard should be OK, just look at ends for any sign of fraying. You might want to rig up a line to run from bridle to hounds and is slack and won't mess up jib. Just in case the internal jib halyard ever let loose. May keep mast from going down. You can send me a photo by email and I will send you one back. Baby Bob mast float may be a good idea. But cheap alternative is a few plastic milk jugs with screw on lips. Just take them off when you race.

Thanks for the compliment on the website. It is a growing project which started as a place for me to put photos up for the family.

My Hobie 16 is a 1984 which had was in storage for the last seven years. I got it for $850...including the trailer and an extra main sail. After looking around on internet classifieds, I figured that was a pretty good price.

Think you got a good deal. Looks in real good shape. Just PLEASE replace the standing rigging as I said. NOTHING is worse than a demast. Here is sailbox and wheels ideas if you don't have them. Boxs are $600 now and wheels $400.

Something that ReefedOne gave me the idea about in one of the other threads. Take these:

Take the advice and replace all the standing rigging. This way you will not have to worry about a dismasting. Also, I would replace the running rigging as well. I know it hasn't been sitting out in the sun, but it is for peace of mind. Even after doing this you will still have gotten a nice boat for a great price.

Just to compare I sold my 86 H16 with an extra set of sails and many other upgrades w/o a trailer for $2300 a few years ago. It had never been stored indoors.

After further inspection, I plan on replacing ALL the lines. Line is relatively cheap anyway and looks like I've got a few weeks or so to get it up and running.

I drove over to Cat Beach on Lake Hefner yesterday to see if anyone was out and it was like a ghost town. It was 80 yesterday, but the water is still only around 60. The big boats were out, but it must still be too cold to bring out the cat people.

I got a couple of books and videos on the way. We're excited about getting it on the lake.

That blue '84 looks exactly like my blue '88 I just got last fall for my daughter. She's 14, soon to be 15 and has been crewing for my son Alexander, but she's sick of everyone saying, 'Nice Race Xander' and not showering her with the accolades she deserves, so she told me to get her a 16 so she can open up a can of whoopass on the B fleet.
I am going to the Oklahoma City thing too, so hope to see you there.

I am going to going to get a Mystere 4.3 for me to train grand daughter Ashleigh on and for me to learn spinnaker on and race in Formula 14. She has been sailing with me for 5 years ( just playing) she is 12 now. She has trapped and wants to learn to helm now. Good luck and send me some pic when you get her the 16 and I will do the same with 4.3. I started with a 16, Good boat.

i've got a brand new never used mainsheet i'll take $40 for. it"s 3/8", XLE Performer series, 100%polyester, double braid, yacht braid, low stretch. NOVABRAID. color is blue and white and length is 40 something ft. off hand i don't remember. I bought a 125' spool and made a new jib and main sheet with whatever the book said they needed. if interested, you can email to [email protected]
