Ok here I go with the restoration of a '73 Hobie. She is in good shape less the paint, so most of my Q's will be geared to that.
First, I have to disassemble her. I went to remove the tramp last night. Is the tramp able to be removed w/out taking the frames apart? Yes I removed the laces.
2nd, when I lift one hull I have to lift almost a foot before the other hull moves. upon further examination I found that the upperframe castings move alot! . I knew she was loose and plan on doing the epoxy assembly.
2nd &1/2, As I look at the pylons,I have 4 eye bolts, one in each casting with plastic nuts, I use this as tie downs to the trailer. If I remove the eye bolts will the frame lift off of the hulls/pylons?
Third, are the rudder mounting screws bolts( with nuts), or screws? keep in mind this is a '73, will I be able to remove them with out fear of the nuts falling off? I have no access holes and no desire to install them, But the lower castings are frozen (corroded) to the pins, the pins are brass or bronze looking.
Did I say something about paint? Ya I'll get pictures and ask them when she's ready for some color.

i''m redoing a 73 right now as well.

Q 2.5 = yes if you pull the bolts out the frame should seperate from the hulls

Question #3 = they are bolts but thread into an aluminum plate rather than nuts. No need to worry about access from the inside.

Thanks Reelknotty.
Thats a relief to know they are bolts, so if they break then I can drill and tap.

What color are you going back with? and what kind of paint?

I am thinking about doing a fade from maroon to orange, yellow, green, blue, with a solid deck. Kind of like the font color blocks to the right of the reply screen. I have Tequila sunrise sails that are in great shape now and want to kind of match that.

Has anyone done this before?

there is some really sharp looking hulls on here. A few words of caution that have been shared with me... Make sure your hulls are solid before you put a whole lot of time into them. I thought I was in good shape but as i dug into things deeper i found some sof spots. Nothing serious but I want to fix them up before I refinish the hulls.

Second is that if you plan on beaching your boat paint won't last. I'm going to go with gel coating my hulls in bright white (I think) I have changed my mind several times already. I have plan white sails so i can pretty much go any direction.

This is where I am now:

you can see the aluminum plate exposed on one of the pictures since I had to rebuild the transom on the port hull.

wow, that's your transom job ? and I thought I had it bab with a delam the size of a football on my starboard side. Thanks to this forum I was able to fix it easily.

I picked up the tequila sunrise sails two years ago, the rivits were prety bad and the leach clew plate was oxidized so bad it had to be replaced. I found the right size semi-tubeular rivets $13, new clew plates $5, rivet tool $55 and I redid all 87 rivits my self = priceless

I was going to do gel coat and then I saw a boat that was shot with a 2 stage paint (poly something or another) and it looked smoother and I was told it was longer lasting (won't chalk up over time). the paint I was looking at is $80 / quart (6-7 COLORS) and $210 for clear coat, =about 1K for paint alone.
does any know of a lesser expensive paint that can be used with clear coat.

Are those designs painted on or decals?

From my understanding it was gelcoat which really makes it impressive
