Post subject:  Standing Rigging

So I'm doing the old swap out the standing rigging thing on my boat. It's the first time that I've done this since I've owned the boat.

I was wondering what exactly should be swapped out. Obviously the shrouds, bridal and forestay need to go, but what about the clevis pins, anchor plates, 10 hole adjuster, shackles ect... Do I need to replace the jib and main halyards?

Does every bit of standing rigging go, or can I get away with reusing some of it?

Thanks for your help,

Adam

Take a look at the hardware and make your best judgement. My "extraneous" standing riggin has been on the boat for about 20 years without any problems. I am going to replace it this spring for peace of mind.

You can check this hardware much more easily than the shrouds, bridle, and forestay.

Instead of replacing the parts you mentioned (except for the wires), how about buying spares? With spare parts in your box you don't have to miss a day of sailing if something goes. Like Nick said, peace of mind.

That's a good point. I usually keep parts I replace for spares. I have a spare rudder blade (yes, it has come in handy) and probably every piece of hardware on the boat (or will once I finish with this round of replacements). I learned to bring EVERYTHING with me when I started going to a 10 day camping/sailing vacation each year. Something always breaks and it is nice to not loose half of your vacation to a broken part that only costs $10.

So I just ordered all new standing rigging (just the shrowds, bridals and forestays for now).

Now I've heard that Hobie has changed the lengths of the shrowds and forestays since 1982, which means more mast rake, but does this mean that my old seaway blocks won't fit anymore?

Thanks for your help,

Adam

Your old Seaway blocks will work just fine. I have a freind who's H16 used teh Seaways and he replaced the rigging every 3 years. You'll be fine.
