Post subject:  New decals on my Hobie 16
I took the old decals off the 1990 Hobie 16 and installed new stripes and Hobie Diamond decals.

They all went on well except the Hobie Diamond Decal is peeling up at the points of the gray parts inside the diamond. Mat, any idea how to get these to stick down better. Add adhesive? I put on the first diamond with water, but the second I put on dry and it still peeled up at the same spots. The right end of those gray bits. The rest of the decals and vinyl I cut on my wifes craft cutter (Silhouette SD) and used oracle 651 intermediate vinyl.

I wet sanded the boat and buffed/ waxed it after removing the old decals. You can still see the ghost of the old decals as 21 years had a toll on the rest of the boat.

Oh yea.
Looks great Splash. I removed my old decals last summer. I'm going with the same colors as what you have. Blue diamond with new silver pin stripe. HOBIE on the transom hulls.
I'm sure someone has a tip regarding the peeling. How did you keep the pin stripe level forward to aft? Chalk line?

I used a ruler and made pencil marks front to back about every 12 inches that were an equal distance from the lip (I think about 4 1/2" or 5 1/2" down).

Hobie had no more of the light blue/cyan "HOBIE" decals for the transom so I made my own. I made the gray stripes by cutting vinyl down to 1/4" wide.

Mat,

I've tried wiping the fiberglass with alcohol but it doesn't help...

on my white also hull about 15 years ago I removed a small sticker that had been on 4 or 5 years and today I can still detect it somewhat. Weather and a little age helps.

I was thinking about adding some custom graphics to my h16, it is acceptable to use vinyl graphics? Will they last? What are the cons to adding custom graphics made from vinyl if any?

I used some vinyl lettering form my boat registration, and it looks great. I love the way the new graphics look too!

I find the vinyl works great! I made decals for my last Hobie too. I use Oracle 651 Intermediate vinyl and cut it on my wifes Silhouette SD Craft cutter. Best thing I ever bought her!

It cuts 9" wide vinyl and usually use a piece 24 inches long.

The decals work great on boats, cars, my wifes washer and dryer :lol: . Just about anywhere you want to stick them.

Here is my boat with the newly added Flying H decals on the inside front of the hulls too. Next I will add my Texas Registration Numbers.

I'm getting way too excited about sailing this thing. I even had to raise the "new to me" sails in the backyard to check them out. (Got them off eBay)

Must have been oils or wax of some kind on the surface. You would have to use something else to stick it down now. Epoxy?

First you need to clean the underlying surface with acetone to get off whatever the vinyl's not sticking to (be careful - acetone will soften the vinyl).

This would probably be more appropriate than epoxy to fix it:

SplashTX, Thanks so much for posting about that cutter. I had no idea the equipment to do this was so cheap now. I did a bit of internet searching and found everything needed. I've spent way over the cost of the equipment getting sign companies to make stuff for me over the years.

This place has everything anyone would need, along with the neat video at the bottom of this page that gives some really good application tips>

Tom,

You will love it! The uses are endless. Here's my TX numbers. I used 3 vinyl colors and stacked the blue on black and cut the gray shadows seperate.

I often design stuff in Corel Draw, then save as JPG and trace in the software that came with the cutter.
