I was reading a thread earlier that once again mentioned Hobie 16 hull weight change in the 84-85 year range.
Curious, I have an '84, is there a way of determining if mine is the "lighter" weight boat?

Thanks-

Red glue seam on the hull/deck.

Some of them even had lead shot down in the bottom of the pylons to bring them up to minimum weight.

Boats gain weight over time, so it may not be light anymore.

I have a 1985 Hobie 14 that's only 2 lbs over minimum - even after adding a dolphin striker and trapeze.

Thanks Matt.

So mine does not have the red seam. Safe to say it was one of the heavier built hulls?

Oh and BTW, my H16 heard the comment about the gaining weight thing. I may pay for that. :D

You really don't know unless you weigh it.

With all equipment, sails, rudders, tiller, etc (no tools, PFDs or anything that's not permanently attached to the boat) - minimum weight is 320 lbs.

New boats are light. At the 16 North Americans this year, boats weighed as little as 308#.

Where is this red seam you speak of? Mine is supposed to be an 86 but I dont remember seeing red anywhere.

By '86, Hobie has discontinued the red glue, however the hulls may still be light.

The red glue seam is visible on the underside edge of the deck lip. Most of the glue used is black. The red's pretty obvious.

As long as her rigging is taut an her topsails full, you can love those afts.
