Planning to replace sails on a H16 one at a time.

Considering both the main and jib are pretty bagged out (1982), which sail do I want to replace first? Main or Jib?

Jib.

Less $, doesn't last as long a main (it's probably in worse shape).

Which sail would be more likely to improve sailing performance more?

If you're looking for performance gains, then you're going to need a new(er) boat, not just a newer sail.

Given that you've got an '82, the jib is going to make more of a difference, but just putting the new jib on the same way as the old one is not going to make that much of a change.

New jibs made by Hobie Cat are shaped differently. Shorter in the foot and longer on the luff - you can rake your mast back more and still sheet in the jib. Whether you can take advantage of that depends on whether you have low-profile blocks (main and jib) and shorter shrouds.

Unless the sails are damaged beyond repair, new sails on an old boat is like lipstick on a pig. Sure looks purty - but it's still a pig.

You're better off selling the boat, taking the proceeds combined with the money you'd spend on the sails, and buying a new(er) boat. You'll get more for your money that way.

I disagree about new sails not improving sailing. I have sailed for many years and worked -rebuilt replaced sails and New Crisp sails have improved performance on every boat I have sailed. Not trying to argue just my personal experience.

I got a new set of sails for my 1984 16 several years ago. It makes a big difference in the performance of the boat. You should ask your self a couple of questions.

Do you race?

If so is it on a club level or do you want to compete on the level with Matt?

Budget

New Sails about $1,2000.

Newer boat $4,000+

If you don't race get a main first.

New sails will make a difference... You would notice it more if you replaced them together rather than one at a time. However Matt is right, just replacing the sails alone might not give you the result you were hoping for especially if your'e racing.

At least if you decide to replace the sails with new fresh crisp ones, do yourself the favor of trying to stiffen up your boat at the same time. Shim or epoxy the corner castings and lace the hell out of the tramp!

Improved performance compared to what? The old sails? Yes. A competitive racing class? No.

On the other hand, improving your sailing skills will do more than new sails, but to directly answer your question: a new jib will help more than a new main; just heed Matt's advice about new jibs being cut differently to accommodate more mast rake.
