Post subject:  Comptip?

Cant anyone tell me what a comptip mast is? Is there something different about that than say a regular mast? I'm rather confused as I read some of these posts. Thanks

A CompTip is the upper section of Hobie masts built starting in / after 1986 (Hobie started with Hobie 16's and later all models). They are fiberglass and non-conductive. They were designed to prevent electrocution by contact with a high power line. Thousands of older Hobie Cats were retrofitted with the CompTip.

Are there advantages/disadvantages to keeping an all aluminum mast besides the obvious reduction in electrocution risk?
Thanks!

I believe it is not class legal to race without the comptip mast but since I don't race, it doesn't bother me. I bought my boat new in '85 and was offered the comptip free but declined. I helped raise a comptip for someone and thought it was heavier than my mast. If your sail has reef points, you will not be able to reef if you switch to comptip. The halyard is different in that there is a short wire with only one slug to clip on the mast. The old halyard with the longer wire, has two slugs. I reefed my sail once in 26 years and didn't see much advantage so it may be a non-issue.
