Post subject:  Placing the ship on it's side to service the hulls
Are there any crushing breaking issues with putting my Hobie 16 on it's side on solid grassy ground? I want to sand the bottom of the hulls and apply some resin and it would be easier with the boat on its side. Also this would be with the mast attached to the boat.

dunno that I'd want to mess with it...I took my tramp frame off and put the hulls on saw horses to work on. May take longer but..... Just sayin'

The easiest way to do it is to take the rig off and turn it upside down on the grass. There are no issues with turning the boat over in grass, except maybe some dirt in the mast base and traveller cleat (easily washed out).

I have seen racers tip the 16's over on their sides on the beach to make adjustments etc.

By "take the rig off" do you mean the mast? So leave the rails and crossbars on and just flip it upside down?

I did it today and it didn't seem to be a problem. Just rolled it over on some tires and used the righting line to put it back upright. Easier than I had thought. I did notice the terrible condition of my hulls though and it's made me want to recondition them - what are you going to use?

Well I didn't have any tires, but that would be an excellent way to not stress the chain plate area. I can't easily take my mast up and down account the mast step pin whole is broken. So instead I used a big floor jack and with the boat on the trailer, I jacked each side up and using a cordless drill and sanding wheel sanded the bottoms of both hulls and put one coat of marine resin on. I might resand and apply one more coat. Hope it works.
