Is there any advantage to buy what is essentially an old boat? I think you can buy a new 2011 for not much more than the 6k he wants for the 86 boat. Are the 86 boats as light as a new one? Other than price is there any advantage to buy the old/new boat? I also find it weird that these boats would be sitting around in boxes for the last 25 years. |

It is weird to have these sitting around for 25 years, but it's not unknown. Is it a good deal? Depends. Depends on how the boats were stored. A box left exposed to moisture for 25 years is going to do bad things to what's inside it. New boats are ~$10K now, so it's a bit of a discount - then again, this is not a new boat. An '88 will be missing many of the small upgrades that have happened since then - integrated traveller tracks, better sails, different cut jib, Aussie jib halyard - just to name a few. A new '88 is not necessarily light, either. That was the time that boats were gaining weight after the reduction to 320# a few years earlier. I owned a new '89 that was the heaviest boat I've ever owned (345#). It certainly would be worth a look, but I wouldn't pay that much for an new/old boat. |

I just realized that the '88 Hobie 16 topic was posted here. The boat is for real. This brand new boat (Hull# CCMB4600J788), which was manufactured in 1988, was part of an inventory from a Chiiot Marine warehouse; a Vermont company that closed years ago. It was recently donated, by the owners of the warehouse, to The Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center (a non-profit Community Sailing Center in Burlington, Vermont) in its original packaging. The trampoline, sails, and mast are stored separately; everything else is in the original boxes with plastic strapping, which were partially opened to take a few pictures. Several others of these donated boats have already been put together and everything needed was in the boxes. This donated Hobie 16 does not fit with the Sailing Center's current fleets. That is why we are looking for an interested buyer. I have not yet figured out how to post the pictures I have on this forum, but I have posted the "New Hobie 16" on the BeachCats forum in the classifieds with pictures. |

Might as well have a fund raiser for the club and have an auction. |
