I'm a day sailor (no racing,,, yet) - getting time to sail is tough, so I'm trying to make the rigging and de-rigging process as quick as possible. The hobie 16 is about 11 years old, and has been well used - fairly haggard. Anyways, my question is this: for the sake of efficiency, would it be a good idea to replace the batten tension cords with shock cord - permanently tied to both eyelets - which can be pulled over the batten cap when rigging? Or is this just stoopid?

It's not stupid - but it would take some doing to get the tensions right. Shock cord tends to stretch, so you'd need to adjust them periodically. It certainly would cut about 5 minutes out of the set up time.

My fear would be when one broke or slipped off the batten. You probably won't know it until you jibe and wonder what that splash was - until you look up.

All my batten ties have stopper knots in them to keep the batten from falling out.
