Post subject:  Rust stains on a white sail

I am trying to get some pretty intense rust stains from a white sail. I have seen on the forum the suggestion to use West Marine FSR. It seems that that gel woul dbe too caustic to use on a sail. I have tried some rust remover I picked up at Walmart to no avail.

Any suggestions? Or can someone confirm the use of FSR on sails.

Thanks

I've never been able to remove rust and mold stains from an old sail. I've used the recommended Barkeeper's Friend and even bleach (not together, though since it produces cyanide gas) and never been able to remove the stains. The best it got was the stain was a little lighter.
You are probably going to need to go to sailmaker and get a patch made if it bothers the people you are passing on the water!

Thanks Eric,

I will remember to speed up when passing them, so as not to offend them for too long.

The next logical question is what lugnut wraps a sail around a boom, a block and a hiking stick and doesn't rinse the salt off the sail????

The sail I got actually had moss growing on it in thick patches. The sail was ruined. The owner fold rolled the sail and stored it in a closed, leaky shed over a summer and never checked on it. Fortunately, I was only borrowing it while my sail was being repaired. It looked so bad even after cleaning and scrubbing, I couldn't force myself to raise it on my boat and waited for my sail to get finished.

I would use a solution of oxalic acid.
Bar Keepers Friend contain it with other ingredients but I would try it alone for a really tough rust stain.
It is a reducing agent and also works by chelating the iron.
It shouldn't affect a dacron sail.
Be aware of its toxic properties though.
You can buy it on eBay.

CLR would probably work too.
