I picked up a Harken 194 to replace my old Seaway setup on a 1985 H16, however I ran into an issue while installing it. The deck plate that mounts on the car is a nominal 3/8" with a 3/16" clevis pin, while the Harken 194 needs a 1/2" deck plate with a 1/4" clevis pin (see photo).

I assume this is a common issue when upgrading the blocks on an older boat. Do I replace the deck plate with a new one from Hobie, or get out the grinder?

Just noticing a 1/4" shackle seems to work.

Looking at the Hobie parts list... it specs out an H138 shackle for both the top and bottom blocks, so I guess this is the correct approach. Curious though, the 2640 is 3/16" and the 194 is 1/4". Wouldn't a 1/4" shackle be preferable for the bottom block? I assume the H138 is 3/16".

It's not necessary to "fill the hole" with a pin on the bottom of the Harken 194.

It works just fine with the stock pin / bracket on the traveller car. You might need to spread the "ears" on the bracket a bit to get it to fit, but it's not necessary to do any other modifications.

A shackle is more convenient than doing that, though. It's just easier to do than working on a ring-ding in the confined space underneath the 194. But you gain about an inch of stack height. Not a big deal if you're not running max mast rake.

Like Matt said just bend the traveler plate out a bit and slide it in, the small diameter pin works fine. You have to remember that the blocks are not made just for Hobie's but for larger monohulls too and those guys all have over sides pins everywhere!
