I've searched for this, and read Matt's description, but I'm still confused. Matt says this: "I place the tiller on the rail just to aft of my sitting position and hold with my thumb on the rail and palm over the tiller. I turn forward and I get the forward foot on the rail, uncleat the main and place it in my aft hand on top of the tiller, on the rail (main held and course held steady) Reach for the trap handle with the forward hand then push out with the aft hand. Once my butt is over the side I grab the mainsheet again with my forward hand then push out with my aft hand I then extend the aft leg as I slide my aft hand out along the tiller. I also have to slip the mainsheet through my forward hand as I extend out." What this doesn't explain for me is the fact that when I "get the forward foot on the rail," the continuous trap rig (connected under tramp with shock cord) is not between my legs but rather forward of my hip. So I don't seem to be able to connect the dogbone. Getting the trap rig between my legs to start with seems difficult or impossible. So this is the part I'm not getting. Thanks for any help. Mike |

The first thing I do is hook the dogbone up. I usually have to raise my body a little and pull the dogbone down, stretching the shock cord some. I then drape the main sheet over my knee (the right knee if I am on a starboard tack) so it will slide as I move out. I hold the handle with my right hand and the tiller in the left. Once out, I pick up the main sheet. I never uncleat the main until I am out and have some reason to, such as the hull starting to rise. I keep the shock cord forward and not between my legs. You don't want it there when you come back in. Coming back in, I slack off the main a little, throw the main sheet onto the tramp and start my turn. Once you throw the main sheet, you are committed and must start turning. It's funny but I can't remember exactly what I do with the tiller or what foot I push out on since it has gotten to be automatic. |

Thanks for this. It clarifies where the shock cord goes. Appreciate it! |
