Post subject: | metal stop on main halyard? how to move, add one? |
I picked up a 3rd H16. (only 180 bucks) I've rebuilt a lot of it and it's working very well - EXCEPT one last thing. The "catch" (whats the term?) the stop on the line that goes into the "catch" at the top of the mast appears to be 4-4.5 inches short of where it shouold be. I'm not sure, but I THINK previous owner, may have had a break and put a loop in the end of the cable which made it a bit short? I thought the stop would be soldered in place? heat didn't seem to release it. I was hoping I could slide it down the wire 4 inches to I can lock it in the catch at the top of the mast. Any tips? else - should I just buy new halyard wire? Alum head. 15ft or so of wire, then rope on the halyard. (like my other 2 hobies). I tipped the boat over today to "check it out" and raised the main halyard with no sail. The wire is "MAXED" up as high as possible, and the "STOP" is still 4.5 inches shy of the catch. could be previous owner repaired it and didn't use the catch. (needless to say all 3 cleats were gone) I've restore them all. |

The stop is swaged on, similar to the eyes at the ends of the wires. You're not going to move it without destroying the wire. You can carefully grind it off, but then you don't have a stop. Make sure the halyard catch is in the right place on the mast. But other than that, the best option is to get a new halyard. |

Doesn't sound like you have the right halyard for your mast. Rope halyard for comp tip, wire halyard for all aluminum mast. |

So no way to add a new stop? (I have wire+rope) halyard on all 3 boats. So pretty sure its' not for comp tip. Though I think someone replaced it with wrong one. (maybe for 14?) The "CATCH" is about 5" down from top of mast. The STOP on the wire is about 10" from the end, and needs to be about 15" from the end of the wire. I thought about moving the CATCH up but then would be at very tip top of mast and stop barely gets that far. Appears I need a new 45.00 Halyard. (if there's no way to add another stop). |

If you know someone with a swaging tool, you can add a new stopper/slug/nicropress, but you will need to remove the loop and the current slug, slide a new slug in place the proper distance and swage it. Slide a shackle on the wire, than another slug at the end and swage it. I will cost you like 30$ for a swage tool. You will also loose a few more inches of the halyard in the process and would also need to relocate the reefing slug if you reef your sails on occasions. |
