The outboard screw or rivet holding the traveler adjustment block broke last weekend. Does anyone know what size screw or rivet is used and what size hole should be drilled? |

KB: Are you are referring to the rivet that holds the jib traveller sheave that's integrated into the front corner casting on '95+ H-16s? If so, according to my '08 catalog, that's Hobie Part No. 8011251. Not sure of the size, but I'm pretty sure Matt M. or Jeremy have answered that question here before. It's a very long (1 1/4" +/-) rivet, probably 3/16" or 1/4 " dia. and stainless, no doubt. |

It is a block from a conversion kit I put on my 1982 H16 five to seven years ago. My block was held on by screws the kit provided. I don't have a picture from my boat, but here are 2 pictures that from an old thread; this one shows the block held by rivets.

I think its called a cheek block. Did your screw break off or strip out? Remove the other screw and take it to the marine supply and get a match. Or drill it out to 3/16 and pop rivet it. |

I'd ditch all the screws. Install the cheek blocks with 3/16" stainless steel pop rivets as shown in the pics above. If the existing holes have become oversized, you may have to relocate and drill new holes. sm |

+1 on the SS rivets. Make sure the mandrels are completely removed so you don't have a meat slicer on your boat. |

Wow - those pics above just happen to be mine. I'm flattered. Pictured are 3/16" aluminum rivets that I drilled out for ss once I found them. If you have a specific question fire away. |

Jman6631 - Thanks for the help. What length were the 3/16" SS rivets? Also, what kind of rivet tool did you use? I haven't found any under $100 for use on 3/16" SS rivets. Most stop at 5/32" for SS, and their reviews were not good, so I don't think I can push it to 3/16" SS. KBSailor |

KBSailor: I used 3/16" x 1/2" rivets but I might go one size longer if I had it to do over again to get more bite. What can I say, I over-engineer, I'm just like that.   Here's the tool you want: http://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-duty ... 66422.html Hands down it's the best. Jeremy at Surf City recommends it, too. I've had zero issues with it and rivet with confidence every time, and at twenty clams you can't go wrong. It has all the nose pieces you'll ever need and the collection bottle is pretty slick. Stepping on a used rivet stem is like stepping on a razor blade. Good luck. Let me know if you need anything else. |
