Greetings. I recently bought an used hobbie 16 to teach my son on how to ride it. I used to sail my hobie 14 and 16 back in the early 90's here in Puerto Rico. My question is reguarding a mast of the 16, this mast is split in two pieces, I don't recall having a two pieces mast. Please adivse, thanks.

Upper is fiberglass? Since 1985 we have had "CompTip" masts where the upper section is fiberglass. Would be glued and riveted to the aluminum at the mast tang area.

If somehow the boat is from Europe... they do two piece masts with an aluminum sleeve for joining (freight - long length issues).

I don't know where the boat came from Europe but you're right, the upper piece is fiberglass but is not glued. It has a screw but I noticed is kind of loose. Should I buy a one piece mast or this one is ok?

Is the sleeve available in the U.S.? Could it be used for a mast repair? My mast has a worn place where it has rubbed against the mast cradle while traveling down the road. I did have a towel between the mast and cradle but it shifted while driving.

That is the original retrofit CompTip. Only used in the first ... 6 months or so, as I recall. We do recommend gluing it in for a tight fit. If you were to get a current CompTip, you would have to cut the aluminum a bit shorter, remove the mast tang, install the tip (glue) and the rivet the tang back on.

No... I'm not 100% certain that they even have one for the 16. We have one we use for pylon repairs... they use on H14 masts.

We are sailing almost every weekend here in P.R., either on Parguera, Fajardo, or Isla Verde, let us know if you want to join us for some sailing. Thanks for the invitation, Im actually performing some repairs on my cat, I will contact you as soon as I finish fixing it. I'm trying to buy used rudder blades, please advise if you know who has them. From where at Fajardo you guys depart to Icacos? Thanks

If anybody knows about parts, is Quique Figueroa ( The H16 Champion and a great and very friendly gentleman ) He`s the owner of Beach-Cats in Isla Verde, very close to Levis Restaurant there.
When I got my 16 she needed a lot of cosmetic repairs, which I fixed myself. If you want, I can help you fix yours, but only as good sportmanship ( no $$$ involved ).
We launch in Las Croabas, next to the boat ramps there, where water is shallow and wind is fair. We tie the 16 to one of the fishermen moorings, and is very easy and cool to rig there, because the beer and "empanadillas de cangrejo" are right there and cheap and the locals are very friendly. We raise the mast on the street and there are no power lines at all. We always do a Palominito-Palomino-Icacos trip, and stay in there for the whole day, IT`S GREAT !!!! We also launch in Boqueron, in the Club Nautico public ramp. In Isla Verde we launch next to The Courtyard Hotel. We are planing a sail day on the San Juan Bay to see El Morro from the water, and we hope to find other Cats to join us, we`ll launch from Catan~o next to the Bacardi factory.
Let me know if I can help, and let us know if you want to join us for fun, we do not wear harnesses and we do not race yet, we sail just for the fun of hanging around the beautiful areas and making new friends.

Nice to hear you guys are having fun!! I was born and reaised in Fajardo, back to the early 90's there were a lot of cats on the east coast, me and my friend had about 4 that we used to sail to the Icacos, Palomino and Palominito's islands. I'm living now at Coamo but few months ago I bought this used 16 to a guy that had it in the sailing school at Carolina where I met Quique. I sailed once at Luiquillo/Rio Grande, the second time (July 3rd) I went to las croabas but it was kind of hard trying to sail out of the bay. It was so windy that me and my wife went turttle (upside down). Because of the weather we couldn't turn it back even with the help of the sea tow. I lost one rudder blade in this adventure but once I get it I will go back to sail. I work at SJ so next week I will go the the Quique's shop. Thanks for the info and for offer your help. Alright man, give me a call. 787-948-7790. I work at the Airport, so if you want I can talk to Quique about the rudders, it`s very close.
We capsized about a month ago in front of Pin~ones, Carolina, after I got hit on the face by the Boom, see an older post "Yes, the Boom can hurt you, it hurt me !!!" and you will see a picture of the cut it gave me.
