So I have searched threw many pages using sail and tube as the key words (tons of results)but have not found what I am looking for. I want to make a tube to store my sails, main & jib. I want to attach some wheels for taking them to and from the beach as I leave the boat on the beach most of the time. I would also like to attach a handle to the other end. I want to be able to "seal" the pipe up for long/winter storage so if I drill into it I need to address that. So my questions; What size pipe? (I went to the normal chain home improvement stores and they carry nothing over 6") Any suggestions on how to adhear the handle and wheels without anything on the inside of the pipe that may damage the sails? Any pics of examples? I know most people have them on trailers but I will hardly use my trailer. Probably two times a year. Thanks |

I do not have any ideas for the tube itself, but for attaching the handle/wheels. You could use metal strapping that wraps around the tube and attach the handle/wheels to it. I have my sail tube attached to my trailer that way. I just used some flat aluminum stock i had. The tube sits on some 2x8's with a half moon cutout, then the strap wraps around the tube to the sides of the 2x8 supports. The handle would be easier because we utilize plenty of weather proof sealants in sailing. Good luck! Jesse |

I recommend a corrugated drain pipe, it's double walled so it's smooth on the inside, thick plastic but light weight. you can buy end caps that are easy to secure and seal. Adding wheels and a handle would also be easy. I use it on my trailer, 12 -14"? I can't remember right now. Box store like Lowe's, sells the splice connectors but not the pipe. They can tell you who locale will sell you the pipe. |

Buxton, How ridgid is it? It wouldn't bend if I was pulling it with a handle down on the beach with weight in it? Ultimately I would like to be able to stow all my gear in it and walk down to the beach pulling one thing. Also how wide apart are the ridges? Could I use a band or strap around it to adhere the wheels? Thanks |

It's very ridged so it wont bend on you, ridges are about an 1" apart, I think you could easily strap some wheels on. |

I also use a corrugated pipe, aka culvert pipe. They come in different diameters, I got a 12" diameter pipe and it works great. I just use ratchet straps between the ribs to strap it to the trailer. If you want to make wheels, the best option would be to make a cart and strap it to the pipe. Maybe like a kayak/canoe cart. But why bring the pipe to the beach? I have to walk 250 feet to my boat and I just carry the sails in my arms. |

My boat is a couple of blocks from my house so it would be nice to just throw everything in there and roll. Or if I do take my boat somewhere strap it to the trailer and go. When I go to the beach to hang out I use one of these beach carts to tote my stuff [url]http://www.beachcartsusa.com/ [/url] It would be nice to not make multiple trips plus I would like the storage of the tube for the winter. |

I made one of these. Works awesome over deep sand, etc, with an 80lb canoe loaded down. I'm sure you could adapt it to your needs. I left out a bunch of the unnecessary stuff, cost me much less than stated here. http://www.kayakfishingstuff.com/drupal ... kayak-cart |
