Post subject:  The Hobie logo is falling off my mainsail
Any tips on how to re-attach the big Hobie H to my main? It is coming off. It doesn't look like it was sown on, more like an iron on logo?

I think (I don't know), but on a boat almost as old as mine, I think it's normal for stickers to peel off the sail. However, I don't know how to stick them back other than have them replaced. Even them, I don't know how to go about replacing them.

I leave them as is, it's part of the character. I'm cheap too.

The flying "H" logo is made from 2 pieces of sticky-back vinyl. It gets brittle with age and the adhesive fails.

There's no real way to fix it other than to replace it. Carefully peel it off and clean up the old adhesive with acetone or 3M Adhesive Remover.

Get the new logos from a Hobie dealer (they're not that expensive) - note that there's a right and left version of the logo so that when stuck back-to-back, they line up with each other.

You are correct, they are only $20 for the set. It might not be my first priority, but I will get it done.

By the way, we have a guru in Detroit? Nice! My home port is Harsens Island in Lake St Clair.

By the way, has anyone every sailed a Hobie Cat in the Port Huron to Mackinac race?

The equipment requirements for that race are pretty steep - the amount of food and water required as well as things like lifelines and life rafts pretty much excludes anything under 25 ft.

Don't forget that two people died in the Chicago-Mac this year - and they were on a 35 ft. keelboat. The Great Lakes are not to be trifled with.

I re-glued mine on with clear silicone. Lasted three seasons.

Thanks - I needed that advice too...mine are becoming tell tales. One question - does the acetone hurt the sail at all? Do you flush it out with water after cleaning the adhesive off? Thanks!

The acetone evaporates cleanly, so there's no need to wash it off. That's also a good reason to to it outside. Acetone is highly flammable.

Use it sparingly - wipe the area with a folded paper towel moistened with acetone. Turn/refold frequently to keep from just smearing the softened adhesive around.

Try it on a small area first to ensure it's compatible with your sail material. I've never had a problem on Hobie brand sails.

I'm sure I'll have good luck sending my wife outside to remove her nail polish.
