Also, from what I've read hereabouts, it doesn't seem to hurt to use some generic silicone spray on the bolt-rope (luff) of the mainsail. I've also rubbed on some paraffin / candle wax from time to time... but then my sails are pretty junkie

I've always noticed that putting up the main on my hobie has been the biggest pain, and most embarrassing thing to do while getting her set up. What happens, is at the beginning my main goes up great... dare I say perfectly, but about halfwat up it gets a bit difficult, manageable, but difficult. When I hit about three quarters of the way up its just like im trying to pull a boulder out of the water. Eventually with a lot of weight on the haliard, we are able to get her all the way up. So my question is, should I grease the mast track? What should I grease it with? I just don't want to do this the wrong way and then make it even more difficult. |

That is typical. It's all about technique. Can go up smooth if you feed the sail properly. Read my sail hoist FAQ for details: http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=371 The biggest pointer is here: Quote: The best way to feed the sail is to stand in front of the mast and reach around either side to "sandwich" the sail between two hands (above the feeder opening) and push the sail up the track. Pull with the halyard, only the slack created, then feed again. If the sail binds, lower slightly and begin feeding again. This technique can be done by one person, but is certainly easier with two working together. It is VERY important that the person on the halyard only pulls the slack up the mast and does not get ahead of the feeder.

Vince42 (1)Clean the mast track first. Then (2)Use a silicone product designed for this job. Then (3)Use the technique that mmiller recommended. I believe it's important to clean the mast track thoroughly first. Good luck! Richard |
