Please excuse my rookie-ness but....

Is this a fair deal? 2009 "Carbon" comp tip mast, what would you guys pay for this?
Are all comp tips "carbon" or is this a higher end one?


I just acquired a H16, everything is good but the mast, I figured that I would replace it with a comp tip.

There is no Carbon in a CompTip. They are black, but that is just pigment to match the black aluminum.

Price is ok for what it is I suppose, but you can get them lots cheaper. Depends what you want to upgrade to.

Thanks guys, a couple more questions:

let's say it was $500, jump on it or keep looking?

is there just one type of comp tip or are there different versions?
if there are, are they performance based or just different companies making the same thing?

I've looked around but haven't seen many used comp tips for sale, I've seen that you can get a retro fit kit for $250 (on forum non local) and up and non comp tips for 100-150+. I have a mast with a 18" offset bend in it now because a tree feel on it so if i get a retrofit I still have to buy a mast.

Understand that "Comptip" refers only to the fiberglass upper portion of the mast, not the whole mast. What is being sold is a virtually brand new mast w/Comptip (as opposed to a "solid" mast which is w/o a Comptip). Solid masts have not been produced since 1984.

For a brand new mast, I'd jump on it, but do you need a brand new mast? There are a lot of older boats in your neighborhood (Kalamazoo / Austin Lake / Gull Lake) that might have straight, used masts.

Technically, there are 2 different versions, but 99% of them are the version that's part of this mast. There was a production change early on (1985) in the retrofit kit that made the Comptip joint more robust. Hobie Cat is the only manufacturer of Comptips.

That is pretty much the info that I was looking for, thanks mbounds.
I don’t necessarily need a new mast, I wasn’t really trying to find one to be honest. I would prefer a comp tip though one for safety and two if I plan on ever racing I would need to have one anyways.

I haven’t seen a lot of comp tips for sale in this area or online, I’ve tried searchtempest.com which checks all craigslist sites in a given range. I am in process of trying to scoop up one of a few older cheap H16's but you never know what is going to come out of craigslist. Good and bad.
My initial thought is that I might as well do it right and get this almost new comp tip, my second thought is that I don’t want to spend that much money on a mast. But I was also wondering at what price point would I be dumb not to buy it. I’m certain that it is lower than 750 which I don’t have in my boat fund anyways.

I’m still searching for a cheaper one comp tip or not to at least get me through this year. We will see what I find, thanks for the info, I’m still open for more feedback

I watch the detroit area craigs list pretty closely and will let you know if I see one. There are occationally complete boats for $300. It might be worth it just to get the mast.

By the way, do you need a comptip for racing? My understanding is that it simply is a composite tip, which is not conductive, to help save you if you run into a powerline near the launch site.

I sail in an area with many small islands with cottages, and many of the channels seperating them have powerlines across them, so I am really careful about where I go. My property has a small ramp that I can't use, since the power lines run right over the top of it.

Yes it is. Has been for 22 years, although some people are still fighting it.

And yes, that is the exact reason it is required.

You can still race in non-Hobie sanctioned races (which is pretty much all of them in Michigan these days). We'd love to see you at a CRAM event next year -- or this year if you can brave the cooling water. I'm heading up to Tawas this afternoon and our final event of the year is October 1st and 2nd at Lk St. Clair.

I am not sure I am up to racing it this year. I have only been on it a couple times in easy wind. I was pretty proud of my ability to control it and get it going pretty fast, or what seemed pretty fast.

I also don't have a trailer, but you guys are only about 16.5 miles away as the crow flies (across the lake)! :lol:

I will try to drive down and watch the racing, if that is allowed. It looks like it is at a private club?

You are welcome to come and watch. If you want to come down early (and commit to being there most of the day), I'll put you to work on the race committee. It won't be anything too strenuous :twisted:

Crescent Sail YC is the most catamaran friendly club on all of Lake St. Claire, and it's not your typical stuffy yahhht club. There's no bar, but there is a kitchen.

Let me know if you're interested. Watching the races from the committee boat is much better than watching them from shore.

You should take up Mr. Bounds on the offer. You can learn more about racing while you're on the committee boat than you can in years of messing around on your 16. It's a great opportunity, and it's always good to support your fellow sailors.
