My son dropped his mast and managed to break the masthead off. There was a bob installed, so when that hit the water, it pealed the head off, ripping the rivets out of the top of the composite tip. It damaged the head enough that it will need to be replaced, which I've been able to find easy enough. I'm just wondering about re-installing it - is there a problem with drilling new rivet holes in the comp tip and aligning the new rivets a little "off" from their intended position? We shouldn't need to trim any length off the tip as long as there is no issue with relocating the rivets. I'm thinking the majority of the forces at that point are directly down the mast, with the sail on one side and the halyard cleated on the fore once rigged. Comments? |
