Hey guys- I ran across this ad on craigslist for "Hobie 16 Performance Upgrades".

http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/boa/2615672438.html

My question is whether the rudder rake adjusters are worth the trouble? I have an '82 boat so the rudders are not adjustable. I emailed the guy and he said this about them:
Quote:
Rudder Rake adjustors - these were made by Sailing Systems Inc out of Crystal lake Illinois way back when. These are used to obtain a weather helm - ie the boat sails to weather when the tiller is released. Basically an aluminum slug with an eccentric thru hole that takes the upper rudder mounting bolt (that attaches the rudder to the casting) and allows you to finely tune the rake of the rudder by moving the upper rudder mounting bolt in the eccentric thru hole - all this done by turning an adjusting screw in the eccentric slug. There is a set of instructions with the rake adjusters that describes, in detail, the installation & adjusting. Aluminum slugs and stainless steel screws. AFAIK Sailing Systems is no longer in operation and I haven't found anything similar on the internet.

Also, are these trap adjuster things worth it or should I buy one of the "fancier" systems sold today.

The trap adjusters look like a stock system with blocks added either to make them return quicker, smoother and/or avoid line chafing. In other words you can't really adjust them while out on the wire like "fancier systems". You can just add blocks to your existing system for five or six bucks each and get the same setup offered here.

The rudder rake adjusters do work, but don't bother with installing the lower set screws.

The trapeze system is pretty much the standard system on new boats, with "dogbone" style rings instead of the "J&H" handles. They work just fine, but can really hurt if you get slapped upside the head by the ring swinging around.

Hi Zack,

I was looking at those also when it listed a week or two ago. I need the trap parts, but have no interest in the rudder rake adjusters, which seem to be the $$ part of the deal.

If you are interested in buying it and selling me the trap parts, let me know. I am in detroit area and could make the pick up also and then sell you the rudder parts.

Does anyone know how to use the rake adjuster above? I have no idea where it goes.

Just throw them in the tool box, and adjust as necessary.

(sorry, I couldn't resist)

I have the instructions in storage with the boat but when I read them I was confused about where they go and how they work.

How much would you sell the old kit for?

$100 :D

But in reality, I'm sick of tinkering with my rudder rake by drilling holes and I want a more flexible solution. Question-is it just the upper casting that is adjustable these days? I could try to find a used set.

The metal dog bones will break your teeth.

I'm not going to use the dog bones. I have can't miss handles that I'm going to put on.

Anyone know about the rudder rake adjusters?

I wouldnt worry about the rake adjusters. The rudder rake does not actually cause Weather/Lee helm. that is controlled by the sail plan (mast rake). What they actually do is control tiller tug by changing the center of effort of the rudders. Sounds like a good idea but worth the buying not unless they are really cheap.

I understand the forces at work here. I just had a terrible tiller tug the last time I was out and I need to adjust the rudder rake to fix that. I could barely lift my arms over my head after the last time I went out. My 1982 boat's rudders were probably drilled for less rake because back then they didn't rake the mast back as much. I want to be able to rake my mast back to "block out" my main blocks.
