Most of our Club boats are early to mid 80's vintage, so about 30 years old.

On one of the H16 Jib cams, (metal not plastic cams), the spring inside the cam finally wore out. Does Hobie or Harken or Seaway sell parts, like the springs? Or is this something we try and source at McMaster-Carr?

Or do we bite the bullet and buy new parts from Fogh Marine?

Spent most of Saturday rebuilding 3 sets of rudder hardware on the Club 18's, including having Andy manufacture custom sized rudder bushings. Andy, we love your mini-lathe, it's so useful. Those boats are old....and getting older. Always something to do.

What do you mean by wore out? As in the cam seems to have no spring? When i got my h16 i had a similar problem but taking apart that cam i found the spring had just become detached and was able to fix it simply by reassembling it.

As in snapped or broken.
Spring action does not work.
In other words, just plain worn out.

Don't know about Seaway, but Harken sells replacement springs and rebuild kits for the 150. You can et them at West Marine:

After 30 years, I'd say you got your money's worth out of those old Seaway blocks - time to let 'em go. Seaway is long gone and you're not likely to find replacement parts. Maybe if someone has an old set of blocks laying around, they'd give them to you, but I wouldn't sink any money into those old things because they weren't very good even when they were new.

Get a new set of Harken cleats. They're relatively inexpensive and they work MUCH better. They also have replacement parts readily available. You won't be disappointed.

I think I have a bunch of new ones. I'll look this weekend. I think I bought them when I started a dealership in the mid '80s and never sold any. Everyone I know upgraded to better cleats.

come off the hip and buy some harken parts for your boat. 20 to 30 years is a pretty good service life. Your Hobie deserves this loving care

Point well taken, Gary. If this were my personal Hobie, no problem, I'd go out and get the good stuff, and my H18 SX has lots of good stuff, Robbline sheets, EPO's etc.

However, I should point out that this is a Club boat, and our Club had a disaster two years ago, and we have been strapped for cash since......some bozo on booze came down one night with gf, and decided to 'have a bonfire'. Using gas from the patrol boat, he dragged together 5 Lasers and two Bytes. The Fire Dept would not go near the ashes for days, highly toxic. The insurance company paid over $30K to 'rehabilitate' the beach. We were under-insured....and had to pay over $32K to replace boats.

The Club Hobie's are old, and tired, and there's not much budget for R & M. As a co-operative Club, we do most of our own maintenance. In fact, we just finished making our own Delrin bushings for the H18 rudders....an interesting project on Andy's mini-lathe.

I was appealing for help/guidance from fellow Hobie sailors....and Tom King has some stuff lying around....we may end up doing a deal. Anyone else?
