| Post subject: | Replacing pylons on a H16 |
Hi, I've just bought a H16 very cheaply, but it has severe corrosion on the hull pylons. I also have a set of H16 hulls that are bent and twisted, but the pylons are OK. Now the big question, has anyone removed aand replaced a set of pylons? Was it successful? Looking forward to suggestions. Regards, Nige www.hobiefleet929.org |

Not possible. The pylons are molded as a part of the deck. That would be major structural work. Hobie France does have a sleeve that fits inside the pylon extrusion. They use it for making two piece masts for Hobie 14's. You could cut the pylons, rivit and glue the sleeve into the remaining post and cut a section to replace the bad aluminum. Rivit and glue it onto the sleeve. This has been done by a few rental outfits, but I have not heard much more about it. We have a small stock of the sleeves. Its not even a part number. They would ba about $15.00 each. |

OK Bill and Matt, The sleeves are cheap enough but you'll need a length of 14 mast to splice on your new pylon piece AND you still have the problem with (slop in) the worn castings. Aha!!! How about slide the sleeve down in the old pylon so it's flush with the top. We'll have to completely replace the foam seal but would have done that in either case. Now, with the sleeve, we have doubled the thickness of the pylon. Can we now drill and tap the pylon and install multiple bolts through the casting into the pylon? Will that tighten things up and take away the slop? |

The sleeve has to be placed such that it can be riveted to the original (whats left of the) pylon. You also have to rivet to the new section just below the castings. Maybe glue also. The may not place a lot of sleeve up high enough. They are only about a foot long as I recall. I would use a epoxy to glue / shim the fit into the casting. |
