Well, I ordered the H16 trolling motor mount for those "out in the middle of the lake when the wind dies" days. I've had THAT happen twice this year! It should arrive today or tomorrow. Hey Nick Still eager to hear how the motor mount worked out. I got stuck in the middle of the lake this weekend too. How much was the whole project, and did it save your summer? Nigel, the link to the photos doesn't seem to work. anybody else have wisdom about motor mounts, please share -steve |

Hey, Steve! As luck would have it, I didn't get a chance to rig the mount up and try it out. Funny how life gets in the way of plans!

Well, here it is! Got the Hobie motor mount attached to my H-16 yesterday and the wife and I took the boat out to a local lake for a "quick sail". We had a series of mishaps; had to raise and lower the mast a few times, run away from bees, etc., but the "electric genny" worked great! We motored out tothe middle of the lake to catch the wind and used it to back off shore when we landed in a cove to chat with some friends. Here are a few images. 
Here's the mount waiting to be installed. Notice the "transom" sticking out from the back of the mount. This is where you mount the motor. 
Here's the back of the mount. You can see the vertical groove and the pin that holds it to the dolphin striker. 
Very easy to put on! 
Ready to go! Had to wait and put the motor on after launch due to the catbox getting in the way! It worked great! Two things to note: with my trolling motor, I didn't have total clearance when swinging the motor into position for action; the head was pressed against the bottom of the trampoline. No problem, though, so long as the prop is submerged, it works just fine! $189.00 for the mount. (I had mine dropped shipped from the nearest dealer so it came to $202.00 all together.) I already had the Minnkota Trolling motor. Deep cycle marine battery $40.00 My total cost: $242.00 and worth every penny for those days that the wind fails you! Glad this was useful to you, Steve. Yes, it's one more thing to have to deal with when rigging your boat, but, in my opinion, it's worth it! Now, if the wind dies, we can just putter around the lake...

I made small aluminum motor mount for an older electric trolling motor and placed 2 small 7.2 amp / hour gel cells in the hull through the access hatch (they just fit). The batteries fit into a fiberglass tray I made in pieces and glued in place at the bottom of the hull back up against the tramp column bulkhead after passing the pieces through the hatch. They're held in place with bungee cord and SS hooks that were screwed to the pieces before passing them through. The wire lead comes out of the hull through a watertight gland and is laced to the bar that leads to the dolphin striker (which is where the motor is mounted and swings up under the tramp when not in use (held up by a line clipped to the tramp lacing and held to the motor shaft with a SS hose clamp). I replaced the control head on the motor with a small plastic junction box and got rid of the speed rheostat which only robs power. The switch was replaced with a momentary contact double throw double pole waterproof switch and placed inside a pvc pipe nipple with two pipe caps and a waterproof gland as a remote hand control on a long cord that stores in the halyard pocket on my mesh tramp when not in use. When the motor is in use, it swings down and is pinned in place. Then I sit back, steer with the rudders and power in or out of tricky marinas and launch ramps. I used it last weekend in the Columbia River to power across the shipping channel and quite a ways up a creek against a ebb tide to the launch ramp. A real plus for cruising and really light and low profile ! |

As cool as an an eletric trolling motor is with the battery and all it scares me about if you flip the boat and it shorts on the frame or if you loose it. I just saw this thing in action the weekend and they guy was running on a little propane canister. Looks like a good no fuss less bs way to have a motor on a hobie http://www.golehr.com/marine.php |
