Hey all, I want to modify my old Seaway 5:1 blocks into a 6:1 system getting a new triple and making some changes downstairs. I've seen all these triple blocks online but they have different work loads and break loads even though they are apparently the same size and for 1/2" ropes. Can I get some guidance? |

The standard upper block for racers is the Harken 344 - 29 mm carbo triple. It has a working load of 990 lbs and a breaking strength of 2000 lbs.  (Most racers use 5/16" line because it runs smoother through the blocks, although it's a bit harder on the hands.) Anything larger than this will have a higher working load. |

Thanks but since I'm converting the old Seaway which are 2.25" (57mm) I'm using a nice fat 1/2" line which will not fit through a 29mm block. Even if I go smaller I'd go to 7/16 but a cheaper 50-57mm will do the job, thanks. |

I think the key information that Matt provided is the working loads that you should target for your new blocks, no matter the size or where you get them. Good luck, and let me know what you end up with, since I have the old blocks and am too cheap to buy a new Harken set. |

Do you have the bottom block? I changed the bottom block first for 2 reasons. 1. It lowered the stack height, so more rake. 2. The Harken cleat. It is much better than the Seaway. At the time I was young and fit. It was no problem working the 5x1 and there was alot less line to pull rounding C mark headed upwind. |

I have the stock Seaway bottom block, but the idea is to do this to it:  Therefore lowering the stack height but I do understand your point with the old 5:1s and how much less line you have to pull to bring it in; its just those last few pulls which are really hard one handed now that I'm 35, specially if I plan to sail for 2 or 3 hours. I'll use the Harkens if I somehow stumble into a block but I'm too cheap to buy 'em. I know 35 is not that old but I had major brain stem surgery like 3 years ago so I'm not in such good shape anymore, also I have less money to spend on toys and more time to "come up" with things. |
