Post subject:  Hardware for 6:1 downhaul Install

Good Morning.

I'm going to install a 6:1 downhaul system this weekend on my 16. I've ordered the connection piece from the traveler car to act as the lower attachment point on the mast.

Any recommendations for hardware (SS screw) to be used to secure this piece?

Thanks in advance!

Use the square nuts (that fit in the luff track) from the downhaul cleat that you are replacing.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately I'm not sure I understand what you're recommending. It appears by the picture that two screws have been placed into pilot holes that are drilled into the luft track at the base of the mast. Requirements for the screws would be SS and a high breaking strength because of the force placed on them when the down haul is engaged. I don't want to guess on strength of fasteners for risk of failure while on the water. Could you please advise?

Thank you!

Nope, no holes drilled in the mast. Use square nuts that slide down insde the track (they're square so they don't spin when you tighten the screw).

The screws should be No. 10 stainless steel machine screws. The combined shear strength of the screws would be over 1000lbs, so the risk of breaking the screws is pretty minimal. You also want to place a drop of loctite on the screw so they don't loosen up.
