While there are special doodads designed for flying flags, I found zip ties worked great (though I did punch extra grommets into bigger flags to zip tie them in more than two places).

Is that the best way to fly a flag on an h16? It looks like some people attach them to the batten ends or something...

Hey All,

I drilled a hole (3/32") in the top of my hast and screwed into it a threaded rod (1/8") with an American flag attached. I attach it before stepping the mast. I made sure that the luff of the flag was looped so that it rotates on the rod freely. It works well as a pre-launch and post-landing wind indicator as well.

Happy Sailing,

David

Post subject:  battens

I do what barren mentioned. take some "flag halyard" (1/12 inch i think) and tie it onto a batten tie, but not on an area that alters the tension or anything, put it through the flag sleave (or just use a grommet) and then loop it through a batten tie on a batten one panel up, and then tie it onto the top of the flag. This keeps it in one place, and as long as its not extrremely tight, the battens wont be affected. I just feel like it looks cooler having the Gangplank's Jolly Roger flag coming off the back of the sail.

I need pictures.

What's funny about that is that I've always flown a jolly roger on my little 19' ski boat and I thought about doing the same thing with my Hobie. :)
