Hello all Great sailing day today - 17 knot winds, smiles all round! First time out on the H16 (2002) and have noticed a creaking noise as the boat flexes through the waves. It appears to be coming from the port side front. Is this symptomatic of some tightening required/normal with H16s or something more sinister? Need to try and sort it out as my wife is a little concerned and I want to avoid a mutiny.  Thanks, Steve. |

The newer boats creak - you can try to get rid of it by tightening the tramp (really tight - you should do it anyway), but it probably won't stop it for long. It's the castings working on the pylons as the boat racks when moving though the water. It's not a big deal, and it will eventually stop, but that might take a long time. Or you could glue the castings to the pylons. That will stop it for good, but you won't be able to take the boat apart easily. |

Funny thing, I had a task to post this same question. I have a 2007 Hobie 16 and I am sailing on a lake. When the wind picks up, I hear a loud popping that sounds like what you describe in this thread - the pylons working on the castings. However, it is not a creaking sound, just one pop. Does that fit into the same category? Or might there be something else to cause worry? Is there a risk of the castings working off the pylons (I suppose I should look at the assembly manual)? How does tightening the tramp help with this? Thanks, Ted |

Hi I haven't heard the popping sound, just the creaking. It happens also when I lift one hull to re-position the launching trolley. Perhaps you could try this and ask someone to listen/look around the pylon areas? Cheers, Steve |
