| Post subject: | Side-stays - insulation coming off |
The white insulation on my side stays is peeling off. It makes for a mess when I go to coil the cables at the end of the day. Can I replace the insulation? Repair it? Simply remove it? any advice? |

That is likely the add-on wire covers. They start chipping away when old. If the wires are that old, time for new ones, but you can replace the covers. Take a pair of plies and clamp around the wire (loosely) pull down the length of the wire and the broken covers shatter off. Use safety glasses... messy. |

My boat is a 1990. That means the cables are 23 years old. If I get new side stay cables, I noticed the don't come with the plastic coating. Where do I get that? Is it necessary? |

For me, the coating is for MY personal protection. If you've ever run any part of your body across the bare wire, you know what I'm talking about. I would think that Hobie would carry these item. If you order the side "shrouds" from a Hobie dealer they come with the Black or White covering, your choice. If you go aftermarket you'll most likely get bare cable. At 23 years old I would recommend replacing all the standing rigging (cables) on the boat, including trapeze wires. It's cheap insurance against a failure when you don't need it. |

The cables with the vinyl coating are way better than a bare with with a cover added. They last the life of the wire. Covering the wires reduces chafe on the sails. Flaws and failures are 99% at the swage connections and visible. |

I had a shroud wire break causing a dismast a couple years ago. I went to West Marine and found white coated wire in a larger guage wire. They won't install the thimbles or crimps for you but they have all the equipment to do it yourself in the store. Make sure you have accurate measurements. |

Most vendors also offer a coated lower forestay, but that's the one wire that I'd prefer be bare. The increased diameter/friction with the coating can make the hank on the jib hang up as it is raised. |
