I need help figuring out use of the trapeze set up. I'm very comfortable sailing the hobie and am ready to use the trapeze. I'm confident I have it set up correctly, but not sure about adjustments... I think. We took the boat out yesterday, albeit in light winds. However, as I had the trap wires set up, I figured, "what the heck" I may as well try to get attached and figure this out. Long story short, I got hiked out, and out, and out, and uh oh, teabagged! ![]() |

Practice on dry land first, with another person sitting on the other side of the boat so it doesn't flip. You want to make your adjustment so when you come in your butt hits the rail and you have to help yourself over it. I know that is a little broad, but it's more to let you know you don't want to be too high and not hit the rail. If your sitting too high, which is good in the ocean to miss the swells and waves, but when the hull gets high, you'll feel a little uneasy, like your going to fall forward into the main. This is more a feeling than it actually happening, but it can if you go too high. I get tea-bagged all the time, mainly because it is gusty in Ohio, but I think I sit lower than most, only because I think I fly higher than most. If I pull down on my dog bone without being on the wire it sits about one inch above the rail at the clip in point. This will depend on your harness set-up as well. It sounds like your locks aren't on right. You need to trust your wire and that's tough to do if your slipping. I see alot of people trying to pull on the handle which can actually disconnect you. I use the handle only to start getting out and to get back over the rail when coming in. Your stability will be with your legs, slightly bent with your forward leg being slightly more straight. Like spiderman. |

Hi Lipton Did you get your trapezing sorted? I'm in a similar learning position as you. Comfortable with sailing but still elarning how to trapeze as skipper. Were you skipper or crew in this post? I tried trapezing as skipper recently (crew was already out). First time I did it it was a blast and it felt like we were going real fast. Second time I went out as skipper (with different crew) I slipped the mainsheet as I went out and lost the wind. Teabagged both the crew and myself and got we both got swept off the back of the boat! Luckily we were still attached to the trapeze and we were holding tight onto the trapeze handle and eventually the boat tipped over and we then climbed aboard, righted the boat and carried on. If you've learnt anything in your trapezing efforts please let me know. Anthony |
