Post subject:  Suggestions on cleaning old sails

Hey y'all.
Picked up a set of older sails, seem mostly in good shape, some work required. However, it appears that in the past some type of oil (not certain on this) was spilled on them (the jib was rolled up in the main), so there are places on both sails that are affected.
Any suggestions on a product to use that may work to get this out without damaging the sail material....? And a moderately aggressive brush or a softer one...?
Thanks for any thoughts :D

I had something similar on my sails. I soaked them both in a bath tub (without battens) with a concentrated solution of oxiclean and dawn. That helped and a soft brush got the best; as a firm brush can damage the fabric of the sail itself.

Hey badgerfan,
when I got my older boat, I had some similar oily stains on my sails. I did clean then with the oxiclean as below which helped some, but the best was when I sprayed the whole sail with the 303 Aerospace Protectant. In this case, I think it took the fade out and made the rest of the sail closer to the color of the oily stains. They did look so much better when I was done. FYI it took two spray bottles for both main and jib.
