Stoopid newbie question: I understand the concept of reefing the main, but don't know how. What is the recommended way to hold all the gathered lower sail together and the line of reef holes close to the boom? What kind of line is recommended? Do I run a continuous line along and around the boom or interrupted (like sutures)? I looked through the FAQ and watched the video but no instruction there. Thanks. |

First I want to say that I tried reefing and didn't find it to be very effective. I have had my boat for 29 years. Hobies since '85 don't have reef points because of the comptip mast and the extra wire in the halyard needed for the second slug. It would negate the electrical isolation that is the purpose of the comptip. I got out my original assembly manual and it has two pages of instructions for reefing. You lower the sail to the second slug on the halyard, slack off the downhaul, and pull the sail down. Remove the pin at the forward grommet at the clew (front bottom corner of the main) and refasten it through the grommet at the reef point. Loosen the outhaul and tie it to the rear reefing grommet, run it around the boom, back through the grommet, then around the rear of the boom and to the outhaul jam cleat. Finally, use short lines to tie the reef grommets to the boom but don't make them too tight. I could scan and send you the two pages if this isn't clear enough. I had reefing grommets and sail reinforcement added to my Getaway's sail. I find reefing to be very effective in high winds, primarily, I think, because it lowers the tipping movement from high on the mast. I can more effectively sheet the sail, and get more speed at less risk of capsize. I have a 6' length of cord that I tie between the halyard and the head grommet on the sail, so I can still latch the halyard at the tip of the mast, while lowering the head of the sail. My boat is boom less, so I roll up the sail, and tie the reefing lines around the sail and lowest batten. No outhaul, but I have a reinforced clew grommet that I tie a cord through for my main sheet to clip to. |
