I made a cheap 6:1 mainsheet block from spare Hobie 16 and 18 Seaway parts (image below), but am having trouble figuring out the best knot to tie off to the ratcheting block becket in my configuration. The problem seems to be there is no room in there for a big knot like a bowline or a fancier knot, so I used just a simple half hitch and it came undone twice today 14-16 MPH wind when I sheeted in very hard. I'm sure I'll hear that I should be using smaller diameter line... I think I have 1/2" and 3/8" is probably preferred, but given what I currently have, what might be the best way to tie off at the becket. Any ideas?

Tie a stopper knot in the end and then do your halfhitch.
I'd really call it 2 grannies.

Maybe This would be clearer.
Pass the end of the sheet through the becket and tie a granny in the end of it.
Now do your "half hitch" using my granny to 'lock' the knot.
My granny knot will face out the side, not into the gap you are seeking to preserve.

I use whipping twine and just wrap the loose end

Just a thought,
You could install another eye strap on the opposite side, just above the cam/switch to bring your anchor point lower ( Then remove the Becket, from the center pulley, and just re-install those standard metal plates without the Becket/ or cut it off) You might have to add spacer(s) to each side and get longer bolts and restring it. You would need just enough clearance to get your line through, so it does not interfere with your switch.

I reconfigured my seaway blocks to make a low pro 5:1. I installed an eye strap on the outside of the upper dual pulley to the rear. I run thick line like you do, it was important that I tied a tight bowline up there to get the clearance. No problems with it coming undone. I thought about making it a 6:1, it would be easy enough to do, but my line would have to be longer to compensate for the extra length needed, when the sheets are let all the way out.

I really like this idea, I'm not afraid of a little fabrication, but where does one get an eye strap? Do they all have the same bolt hole spacing, or will I be able to source one that will align with those ratchet switch bolts?

BTW, I decided to try two half hitches now, looks pretty tidy and seems more secure... won't know until my next windy day.

The Buntline Hitch takes up no more room than 2 Half Hitches but is elegant and secure (very hard / impossible to untie). It is basically a Clove Hitch tied around the standing part of the line under load.

Bmdumr, In the short term, I'd give that knot that RHoughVYC shared, or the others, a go, to keep sailing through the season until you get the part(s).
I fabricated mine from the/a U shaped standard main down haul shackle, that connects the down haul to the main. that my dealer "Midwest Sailing in MI" had laying around in the used parts section. If you check around, I'll bet you could find that eye strap, Some dealers have a used parts section, which includes used misc. parts of parts, or you could get another used seaway block or the parts from craigslist, ebay, there is probably a few dealers out there or sites that you could find it. "Backyard Boats" Website comes to Mine.

On page 53, lower right, in the P & A Catalog, they show that as a "Fairlead" part#H137. When you go to the parts index, on page 68, it is listed as: H137 Eyestrap-large SS. Seems as though you could buy it from Hobie as an individual part. Main thing to make sure of, is that the distance, between the center of the holes are the same as your lower eyestrap or fairlead. There is a good chance that the newer blocks may use an eyestrap the same size ( or you could still fab. off what is available). Check it out, if it is, put that on your next parts list, for when you go to/order from the dealer.

I retied to the becket with the Buntline Hitch... thanks for the tips!
