Post subject: | Velcro Jib Batten Set |
I recently got a 2011 Austria Championships sail set and I'm looking for a jib batten set that will fit in the velcro batten pockets. I tried to remove the caps from my existing jib battens but they seem too long for velcro batten pockets. Does anyone know where I can get a set made specifically for the velcro jib or can you provide measurements for each batten so I can cut them down to fit? Any advice on using the velcro jib is appreciated. Thanks! Bloome |

From previous discussions I recall members saying they just cut them down. |

Hi Bloome, I also got one of the Euro sail sets from the German Championship in 2010. As far as the battens, I cut down the battens so that when fully inserted they were flush with the end of the batten pocket. To cut the batten, find the length that you want, use a hacksaw with a fine tooth blade and cut halfway through the batten. The flip it over and cut from the other side. that helps to keep the batten from splintering. Another trick I have used when cutting fiberglass or carbon fiber is to wrap the area with masking tape and then cut through that. Page 16 of this manual will help with the installation http://www.hobie-cat.net/download/manuels/hc16_gb.pdf You will also most likely need to add a 1" shackle to the connection of the main sail to the gooseneck. Hope this all helps. Doug |

You do not need any batten sticking out imho. |

Was able to look at the battens and what I ended up with was that the battens were flush with the batten pocket and the only part outside of the pocket was the velcro loop where it looped over the batten end. Doug |

Thanks all for the advice. I cut down my battens to fit. I started with the shortest batten and cut it flush to the pocket but didn't think it allowed me to adjust the bend so I cut the rest leaving them sticking out about a 1/4". |
