I just broke my 2nd rear corner casting on my 16 yesterday. Broke the other side a couple weeks ago. This seems odd. Why am I breaking these? I weigh 220. And sail pretty heavy air usually. I dont go out if its not single or preferably double trap conditions. Lake sailing only...no big waves/swells. Both sides broke in the EXACT same area. Is this just a fluke or is something wonky going on here? Not really very fun replacing these! Pics in a minute... |

I'm no expert but I'd guess it has something to do with your rig tension back to your main sheet blocks on the rear traveller. So many factors to consider - mast rake - new vrs old masts in that they all bend differently, where you attach your blocks to your boom etc etc. I guess Matt Miller/Matt Bounds are best to comment. |

Lightly used 1980 boat. All aluminum mast. Harken 6:1 attached at rear hanger on boom. Aftermarket mesh tramp laced tight (inch and a half or so of inward bow on side bars) New euro sails with mast raked back to not quite block to block when pulled as tight as you can get em. I only started breaking these after I got my new sails...hmmm. We were sheeted tight sailing close hauled up a long lake yesterday in 20ish mph winds double trapped traveler in center. I think I heard it pop when it cracked. Am I sheeting too tight? Are the castings just old and fatigued? Was there a bad batch? Should I start stocking up on used castings off ebay LOL. |

Old castings. Cast aluminum can age harden over time and become brittle. The newer castings have a much more robust flange at the end where the crossbeam inserts. It's just coincidence - and the fact that you only sail in heavy air - that they both broke. The solution is to replace them with new castings, even though they're expensive. They won't break. |
