| Post subject: | Rivet vs sex bolt for rudder cam replacement |
My rudder cams are shot and I'm going to replace them. Has anyone had a problem with the sex bolt type kits working out? I like the idea of being able to easily remove to grease/clean/replace, but don't want it to work out on the water. Thoughts? |

I have the bolts.. Never seen or heard of them having a problem |

Are you talking about the binding post screws? Any screw can work its way loose so I'd recommend using Loctite on just about everything. |

In 1983, I bought the dies for forming the ends of the rivets, and a bunch of the rivets. None of that ever got used the first time, and I've changed hundreds of rudder cams. The sister screws are much easier to change on the beach, I would think. I've never heard of one coming unscrewed. |

Sex bolt?... Sister screws? I prefer the original press flair pins. the sister screws work and can easily be removed, but for the number of times you need to do that? They also wear the castings because they don't get as tight. |

The sister screws work well. As stated, use a dab of Loctite on the screw threads and it will be fine. Actually, the screws are captured anyway by the upper rudder casting so it really can't pop out. The only issue I've had with the sister screws, at least on the H17/18 castings, is that they are about 1/16" too long. I used a grinder to shorten the female end slightly so they snug up tight to the casting. sm |

I like having many SEX bolts in the old Hobie Hell Box in fact I can not get enough of them. The sister screws are another matter and have saved many many sailing days when something goes wrong in the rudder cams usually in the ocean. The sister screws allow the rudder cams to be adjusted and or removed as necessary on the beach. I keep a couple of small Phillips head screwdrivers handy to compress the rudder spring enough to get the sister screws {Sex Bolts} aligned to insert. I have never really had one back out and it can only go so far or the casting will catch it I have a Hobie 21 se and a Hobie 16 and the size is not the same length These are a great product and work well and keep from having to bring a drill and rivet gun out on the sand.
